Long-term Courses for Chinese Language, which usually last 3~16 months, are designed specifically to fully enhance the students' abilities of speaking, writing and interpreting. Courses such as Chinese Medicine, Literature, Arts, Geography, Folk Culture are carefuuly incorporated into the language learning curriculum, so that students can not only communicate with Chinese people smoothly but can also experience and understand the abundantly charming Chinese culture.

1. Requirements

Those who are healthy and willing to abide by Chinese Laws and University's regulations are legible to apply..

2. Course Contents

(1) Beginners Course: Junior Chinese (including grammar, pronunciation, and conversation), Junior Listening & Speaking, Reading (including Chinese characters, culture), and Chinese Folk Culture (elective)

(2) Intermediate Course: Intermediate Chinese (including syntax, culture, and discussion), Intermediate Listening & Speaking, Reading (including culture), and Chinese Folk Culture (elective)

(3) Advanced Course: Senior Chinese (including syntax, translation, discussion), Senior Listening, Chinese Culture, Practical Writing, Chinese Folk Culture (elective)

Note: Check the appendix to see the concrete curriculum schedule.Class will commence when there are 5 students, and there will be a maximum of 20 students per class.

3. The Way and Procedures of Application

(1) The Way of Application

A. Chinese Government Scholarship students

Make contact the requisite departments/ministries of their governments. Succesful applicants will be issued an application form for the Chinese Government Scholarship and such applicants are welcome to express their wish to study at JNU when completing the section for “preferred institution”. The China Scholarship Council (CSC) will forward the application materials to JNU. Once accepted, the applicant is entitled to Chinese Government Scholarship.

B. Self-supporting students

Can apply directly to School of International Education, Jiangnan University.

(2) Application Materials

A. Fill out the “Application Form for Foreigners Wishing to Study in Jiangnan University”.

B. Photo-copy of Highest Academic Certificate and School Record

C. Photo-copy of “Physical Examination Record for Foreigner” (valid for 6 months, the original copy must be kept for registration, if not qualified cannot enter the school)

Note: Concerned Application Forms: Applicants for Chinese Government Scholarship may ask for the Application Forms from the concerned departments of their governments. Self-supporting applicants may download directly from the homepage of School of International Education website, or ask for the Application Forms from International Students Affair Office in School of International Education.

(3) Deadline of Application

July 31 for autumn semester

January 31 for spring semester

(4) Admission and Visa

Applicants who have been admitted to JNU will receive before July 31 “Notice for Admission” and JW201 or JW202 Form with which they can apply for their visas to Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

(5) School Beginning

The first Monday of September for autumn semester.

The last ten-day period of February for spring semester.

(6) Registration

During registration, students are required to present their passports, Notice of Admission, JW201 or JW202 Form, Physical Checkup Record for Foreigners (valid for 6 months), 6 photos (2 inches, front view, half length, hatless). In addition to these, self-supporting students are also required to pay their tuition, registration and accommodation fees.

(7) Students Reception

Our School will welcome new students at Shanghai Pudong International Airport 2 days ahead of the commencement of each semester.Please inform us of your flight No. and arrival time so that we could arrange pick-up properly. Students who will come at another time, if needing to be met, please contact us in advance and we can arrange the pick-up, but there is a separate fee for this service.

4. Tuition Standard

(1) Tuition: ¥14,000/school year (Those who study for less than one semester will pay ¥3000/month)

(2) Registration Fee: ¥400/person

(3) Stationary Fee: according to actual expense (about ¥150/semester)

5. Facilities and Fees

(1) Accommodation

Single Room (with toilet, air-conditioner, water-heater, TV, telephone, Internet): ¥25/day

(2) The food fee for each student dining at the dining hall on campus is about ¥15-20/day.

(3)Insurance

"Comprehensive Insurance Plan for Foreigners Studying in China" is required to taken, and the insurance premium is ¥600/year/student.

(4) Other

Within 1 week after new students arrival, the staff will show around the university and the city, and they will also assist with other relevant matters such as dealing with the residence permit, opening a bank account, medical insurance etc.

 Note: All the classes above will offer courses of interest on Chinese folk culture in the afternoon, which include Calligraphy, Drawing, Clay Sculpture, Er Hu, Taiji Shadowboxing, Deep Breathing Exercises, Martial Arts, Cooking etc. Students can choose 1-2 courses, and class will commence when there are 10 students. A separate fee will be charged for these courses.
